The Town of Aurora is extending the Windrow Removal Pilot Program for the 2024- 2025 winter season to help seniors and residents with disabilities. Launched last year, the program helps clear the snow piles left at the end of driveways after road plowing.
“We recognize that for many seniors and individuals with disabilities, snow removal can be a significant barrier to getting in and out of their homes safely," said Mayor Tom Mrakas. “By extending this program, we’re continuing our efforts to make Aurora a more inclusive and accessible community.”
To qualify for the program, applicants must be 65 years of age or older. Residents under 65 are also eligible if they have a disability and there is no one in their household over the age of 16 that is physically able to remove snow.
New this year, there is a $100 non-refundable fee per household. Residents who meet the financial assistance criteria may be exempt from paying a fee.
The Windrow Removal Pilot Program will begin on December 1, 2024 and will run until April 1, 2025. Windrow clearing clears one car width after an eight centimetre snowfall, following the plowing of primary and secondary roads. The Town aims to clear snow windrows for all participating households within 24 hours of a snowfall, subject to weather and resource availability.
Applications for the program are now available. Residents can submit their completed application in person at Aurora Town Hall or the Joint Operations Centre until November 1, 2024.
