The Town of Aurora has signed an agreement with fibre internet provider telMAX that will see the company build a fibre optic telecommunications network across Aurora, providing residents and businesses with the opportunity to receive high-speed pure fibre internet.
Fibre internet uses fibre optic cables that are made of small fibres of glass. With this method, data is sent at the speed of light, resulting in substantially higher and more reliable internet speeds than traditional cable and DSL internet.
“This is a very important project for the Town. We know that Aurorans increasingly need more reliable and faster internet, especially with the massive shift we’ve seen in the number of people working from home,” said Mayor Tom Mrakas. “The reality is that access to high-speed and affordable broadband service is now a necessity, not a luxury, especially in today’s economy. And what’s incredibly important for us is that this project will strengthen the Town’s ability to get critical information to residents and businesses, while also allowing us to explore exciting new initiatives like offering free Wi-Fi at places like Town Park.”
Aurorans will begin to see planning and construction crews in their neighbourhoods within the next few months as the company begins to install the fibre optic network across town. Residents and businesses will be informed well in advance of any construction in their area, by both telMAX and the Town. The cost of installing the fibre network will be paid entirely by telMAX, and once in place, residents and businesses will have the opportunity to receive fibre internet by signing on with telMAX as their internet provider.
“We have enjoyed working closely with the Town of Aurora on a plan to bring 100 per cent pure fibre to neighbourhoods and residents throughout the town,” said Stuart Roberts, CEO of telMAX. “We understand the importance of high-speed, reliable, and affordable Internet service whether you need that for working from home, staying connected with loved ones, or just being entertained. We understand this because we live and work in the community. We look forward to establishing more economic and cultural partnerships as we bring Canada’s fastest internet service to all of Aurora.”
telMAX is a locally based company headquartered in York Region. For the past two years, telMAX has built its own fibre optic network in Brooklin, Newmarket and Stouffville. Using the latest technology, the telMAX network is capable of delivering synchronous speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
Summary of the Construction and Installation Process | telMAX |
telMAX has been busy installing a state-of-the-art fibre optic network in your area. We appreciate your patience as we continue to build a faster, more reliable network. We want to reassure local residents that all properties affected by construction will be restored to town standards. 1 - LocatesPrior to starting construction, locators will be marking the underground utilities such as gas, water, hydro, TV and telco. Please do not remove the paint or flags during this process for your safety. If you have private underground systems like water sprinklers please contact us at cc@telMAX.com to inform us prior to our construction commencement. 2 - ConstructionAs construction begins on the boulevard, large, noisy equipment will be seen around the neighbourhood. Hydro Vac safe excavation practices will be used to expose utilities making smaller holes in the municipal easement. These holes are made to ensure the safety of the crews and residents by visually confirming the location of utilities, ensure the drilling of safe passages and check for any unknown obstacles. 3 - Conduit PlacementDirectional drills can be found on corners, street boulevards and on private property in unique situations with permission. During this process large spools of conduit will be visible while we place it through the path the directional drill has made. Larger holes on the ground are made to install fibre terminals and Ground Level Boxes (GLB) on municipal easements. 4 - Condit and GLB InstallationBefore the fibre installation commences the conduit infrastructure is connected and spliced to each resident’s property line within the neighbourhood for future service availability. 5 - Fibre BuildFibre blowing crews will jet the fibre through the conduit pathways. This portion of the fibre installation all resides underground which was installed during the previous construction steps. 6 - RestorationOnce the fibre infrastructure project is complete, restoration will begin and continue through the coming months. telMAX is commited to restoring all affected areas complying to municipal standards and diligently work to restore impacted areas through the late Spring and Fall weather permitting. |
