Incident Type: Hazardous Material Spill

Address / location of incident: Bayview Avenue, Aurora
Description: Central York Fire Services (CYFS) responded to reports of a chemical leak. The first arriving CYFS unit informed that muriatic acid was spilled in a storage room and a haze was being released from the room.
Customers and staff were evacuated. The Hazardous Material Unit used gas detectors to establish a safe perimeter. They located and contained the leak and followed recommendations provided by a governmental agency (CANUTEC). An agency was called in by the pool service to remove the neutralized acid.
- Cause of incident: The cause of the incident was a chemical leak.
- Casualties / Injuries: No injuries to report.
- Community Impact: None.
- Current Status: CYFS has fully contained the leak.
- Resources Used: CYFS responded with four trucks, 16 firefighters, and a Chief Officer. Mutual aid was not required. CYFS worked in collaboration with York Regional Police.
