Join us for a day of education and reflection at Aurora Town Park on September 30

The Town of Aurora invites residents and community members to unite for a day of learning, reflection, and Indigenous reconciliation in honour of the annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This significant day recognizes the ongoing trauma caused by residential and day schools and recognizes those who never returned, their families and survivors.

“Our Town has made an ongoing commitment to take steps forward, on the important journey of reconciliation, to support the healing of Indigenous Peoples suffering from the painful legacy of the residential school system. At this important gathering, we can contribute by uniting to reflect, listen and committing to do better,” said Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas.

WHEN: Saturday, September 30, 2023 - 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Community Reflection Activity - 6 p.m. – Ceremony and Gathering

WHERE: Aurora Town Park - 49 Wells Street

Residents are invited to come together to participate in interactive commemorative activities that will remind us of the action taken towards meaningful reconciliation. Community members can leave their handprint on picnic tables to be placed in community parks as a reminder of those children who did not make it home. There will also be an opportunity to paint rocks, transforming them into a reflective activity to create artwork on wooden tiles.

Return to Town Park at 6 p.m. to continue to reflect, listen and learn with a ceremony and sacred fire led by Anishinaabe Grandmother Kim Wheatley, Elder Pat Floody, Ancestral Knowledge Keeper Raiden Levesque and Spoken Word Poet Sarah Lewis.

Parking is limited, so please carpool if possible. For more information, please visit aurora.ca/truthandreconciliation or call 905-726-4762.
