Aurora’s economy continues to show strong signs of post-pandemic recovery, with 3,037 jobs added to the town’s employment base since 2019 along with 72 new businesses, according to York Region’s 2022 Employment Survey Results.
The overall job growth between 2019 and 2022 far exceeds the small drop in employment that occurred during the height of the pandemic.
“I’m so encouraged by these numbers – it’s a testament to the resiliency of our business community and a signal that more employers and small business owners are coming to Aurora to open up shop, expand, create good jobs, and grow our economy,” said Mayor Tom Mrakas. “And while this is great news, so many businesses still need our support as they continue in their recovery from the past three years. So, I encourage all residents to get out there and support our local business owners.”
The survey results show that the top growth sectors in Aurora between 2019 and 2022 were health care and social assistance (+491 jobs), information and cultural industries (+472 jobs), and manufacturing (+464 jobs).
Over the ten-year period between 2012 and 2022, the town’s manufacturing sector saw the biggest gains, adding 1,647 jobs.
“We are pleased that the Aurora Economic Development Corporation Board has been actively involved in the Mayor's Business Task Force since the early days of the pandemic, and proud that we have been able to continue to implement the Aurora Economic Development Strategic Plan,” said Marilee Harris, Chair of the Aurora Economic Development Corporation, the non-for-profit corporation that provides strategic leadership and coordination of community economic development on behalf of Town Council. “We are extremely encouraged by the growth of our business community and look forward to welcoming more businesses to Aurora."
