Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas was elected to the board of directors of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) at the organization’s annual general meeting taking place in Ottawa from August 18 to 24.

AMO, a non-profit organization, represents and advocates for Ontario’s 444 municipalities and provides municipal leaders with a forum to address shared priorities.

“I’m honoured to have been elected to the AMO board as part of the Regional/Single-Tier Caucus. It’s an incredible honor to represent Aurora and York Region and collaborate with municipal leaders from across Ontario,” said Mayor Tom Mrakas. “I’m excited to bring Aurora’s voice to the table and contribute to the collective efforts that will benefit our residents and municipalities across the province. Together, we’ll work to tackle the challenges that our communities face, drive positive change, and help shape a prosperous future for all of Ontario.”

As an AMO board member, Mayor Mrakas will play an integral part in setting the strategic direction of the organization for the next board term, which runs from 2024 to 2026. Some of the key priorities that AMO will aim to address in the upcoming term include housing and homelessness, infrastructure funding, the opioid epidemic, public safety, climate change, Indigenous engagement, access to health care services, use of artificial intelligence, and more.
