The Town of Aurora has partnered with the Aurora Black Community Association to bring residents and the community exciting opportunities throughout all of February to learn and celebrate Aurora’s Black community and the many diverse and rich cultures across Canada. Events include a Pan-African Flag raising ceremony, a Black History Gala, a Paint, Poetry and Jazz night, Diversity on Ice and more!

Black History Month is a time to celebrate and learn about the important contributions of Black Canadians and their communities. Many contributions from Black Canadians have helped shape Canada into the culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous country it is today.

“Black History Month gives communities across Canada the opportunity to celebrate Black Canadians and their vital contributions that have shaped Canada’s history,” said Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas. “I encourage the community to visit the Town’s Black History Month webpage and discover the programming offered all month that will allow individuals and families to explore, reflect and celebrate the importance of Black history in our country.”

About Black History Month During Black History Month, Canadians celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians and their communities who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada a culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous country. Celebrating Black history and achievement in Canada dates back to the 1920s. In 1995, Black History Month was officially recognized in Canada after a motion was introduced by the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament.
