A simple idea that before settlement, industry, and before technology, we lived in balance with the land and all living creatures. A harder and simpler life that we have traded at the cost of that balance. An idea that hopefully can inspire us all to be mindful of the fragile state that our progress has put Mother Earth in. To strive for a progress that is in balance, and benefits the land for future generations to enjoy.

Portrait of August Swinson
August Swinson’s work is largely nostalgic with a sense of fun. His work is influenced by memories of his childhood living on the reservation of The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. Seeing the work of the Group of Seven, Emily Carr and especially Norval Morrisseau in his teen years was an important artistic milestone in his life. August’s grandfather and these other artists have been lifelong influences. Like many First Nations people and many Canadians, August feels a deep connection to this land. The land, and animals of Turtle Island in particular, are main themes that show up in his art. Follow August on Instagram: @augustillustrated
